Johnson, born in London in to a German/Flemish immigrant family, became an extremely prolific portraitist, working on every scale, including painting full-length groups. Northwick Park collection. The second Baron was an avid collector of works of art, antiques and coins. Much of his collection was housed at Thirlestaine House in Cheltenham and in he published a catalogue of his holdings there.
